If you have observations of deer anywhere in Los Angeles and Orange County, we would really appreciate help in documenting this species. Also, we are currently collecting mule deer droppings for genetic analyses to study deer across the Santa Monica Mountains and Orange County and how their populations may be connected or separated by distance or barriers to movements.

There's surprisingly little information of any sort on deer in Southern California, so your observations are a big help!

We can use the information to better plan our field surveys and the sightings give new data on deer distribution that we can use to monitor this species over time. Mule deer Odocoileus hemionus are a relatively common yet understudied species throughout the southern California SoCal region.

Mule deer have potentially strong impacts on SoCal ecosystem health as their foraging and grazing can significantly impact the vegetation structure of plant communities. They are also valuable prey species for mountain lions in this region. We not only want citizens to fill in gaps in information within Griffith Park but we also decided to expand our survey to all of southern California due to the lack of information about this species region-wide.

From an educational standpoint, this project is an educational opportunity for SoCal residents to learn more about this fascinating species and its role in SoCal ecosystems.

    You can find three species of deer in California: the mule deer, the elk and the fallow deer. Mule deer and elk are the only native California.
